The first marker pen was patented in 1910 by Lee Newman who utilized a soft tip made of hard-pressed felt. Generally speaking, all marker pens have their own ink source with a porous tip made from felt or ceramic materials. They first hit the U.S. market in the 1960s and very quickly became a must-have writing tool. Their instant popularity led to the creation of better markers designed for expanded applications at home, work and in the classroom.
